Guitar Lessons - Common Questions

Q: Why are video based lessons important?

A: We cannot stress enough how important it is to learn to play guitar visually from watching someone as opposed to learning from text alone. Learning from printed material alone is frustrating and confusing for most people because there are so many dynamics and changes involved when playing guitar (finger placement, strumming patterns, picking patterns, various timing changes, etc.). With video, you get a complete picture, detail by detail, without anything left out. This makes it much easier to learn much more in a short amount of time.

Q: Do I really need to learn scales?

A: Yes. Scales are the backbone of music. Knowledge of the basic scales (major, minor, and pentatonic) and when to use them are an essential ingredient to become a great guitar player. If you want to be able to pick up a guitar and jam with almost any song, scales are essential.

Q: What are modes and how do they differ from scales?

A: A mode is a group of intervals and the degrees that correspond harmonically with the chord being played underneath. Modes might have a parent scale attached to them, but they are not scales. Modes can change throughout the song, but still use the same scale and be in the same key. Scales, in contrast, cannot change without changing the key.
