How To Play Lead Guitar

How do you learn to play lead guitar? There are so many ways available now but not all of them are good at teaching you how to play lead guitar. You can take private lessons, you can teach yourself, you can attempt to learn utilizing written, do-it-yourself courses or Internet based courses-or you can purchase instructional video's offered for sale by the actual musician of the songs and leads you are trying to learn.

The first and most obvious step before learning to play lead guitar is to get yourself a guitar and equipment that you will need. This means a reasonable guitar with a decent sound, a pick, a shoulder strap, a tuning pipe, and a decent protective carry case or cover.

You are better to buy an electric guitar as the effects you want to be able to emulate are difficult to achieve with an acoustic guitar. This means you are also going to need to purchase a clean sounding amplifier that will also probably come with some effects built in. Make sure the cables you get are robust and flexible as well.

Lead guitar playing usually involves picking out the notes and applying techniques (such as string bending, slurs etc) to create the desired sounds. But before you leap into this you obviously need to know just where the notes are and how to play them. Now the open notes (the bare strings) are: E A D G B E. Sometimes it is easier to remember them by making up a rhyme such as "Every Adult Digs Good Beer Early.." This uses the first letters of each word to represent the notes of the strings from top to bottom.

The next step is to get to grips with your new guitar. Have a play with the guitar and learn how to tune it up. With new strings there will be slippage and stretching so you must master the art of tuning your guitar before you can start to play anything.

Talking about strings, if you decided on an electric guitar, you may want to consider using ultra slim steel strings. They are easier to press when forming the notes and quicker to get around the fretboard. The frets are the raised thin bars fitted to the long neck of the guitar and are fixed into place on your guitar.

Just like so many things in life, experience and accomplishment comes after getting the basics right. Getting the basics right comes from regular and diligent practice. Your heroes didn't just pick up a guitar and create an album. The point is, be prepared to put in regular practice and you will be rewarded.

Write out a list of the sort of music you want to play first. Play what you are keen on and even have a go at picking out some of the notes. You will be surprised how easy it can be to follow a small piece here and there.. List out the tracks you like so you can discuss them with your instructor or even in forums. Perhaps play along with a friend who has a guitar so you can pace each other.

Now you are ready to begin with some lessons and learn how to play lead guitar properly. There are a number of ways to get lessons. From friends who are already playing the guitar and you like what you hear, attend classes, or the most flexible way is via the internet. This can also be the least expensive and expose you to people who have the real live experience. Right, it is now time for you to begin with some basic notes and before long even your first riff or tune..!!
